Can these all live harmoniously in the universe? Are we free to chose as the book says or are we set upon a pre-determined path?
Does one philophy negate the other or do they compliment each other.... by our free will do we set our feet upon the path we have chosen and thus meet our fate?
Thoughts Anyone????

Re: Freewill, Destiny, Fate
Tue, June 3, 2008 - 5:32 PMBy definition, fate is predetermined while destiny may or may not. Although destiny is believed to be predetermined by some, destiny can simply mean what is to happen. Destiny is more in line with free will whereas fate is not. I like the less restrained definition of destiny because of my belief in free will.

Re: Freewill, Destiny, Fate
Wed, June 4, 2008 - 9:18 AMFreewill means God gives us rope. Destiny and fate are the end results to the choices we make in using the rope. I don't think our lives are a forgone conclusion, but I do believe that there are choices we can make that will decide how are lives will conclude.
If I were drinking this topic would have been brought up in a bar and some self proclaimed intellectual would have blustered nonsense for at least two hours explaining his point of view. Thank you GOD for my sobriety. Curious how fate means more to a drunk than a sober person.

Re: Freewill, Destiny, Fate
Wed, June 4, 2008 - 9:08 AMi don't believe we have a set path or destiny. i believe we have free will and with that come choices. with the power of choice comes the responsibility of choice. life happens and what we have is the free will to make choices based on what our circumstances are at any given time. good things happen and bad things happen, thats just life, but how we react to those things is our choice to make. what we do have is a HP that will walk with or carry us through the bad times and help us to make choices that will get us through the bad time hopefully without creating more wreckage. working with others is the best way for us to get out of HP's way and let him do his work. i know when things are rough, our instinkt is to take the reigns and go to work fixing whats wrong, but that is exactly the wrong thing to do in these times. getting out of self and seeing what we can do for someone else is how the magic happens, you just have to have faith that HP is bigger than all the stuff and go about doing our part of the contract in the 3rd step. -

Wed, June 4, 2008 - 9:29 AMI believe that I don't want to chase my tail so I don't ask myself such questions. Not being snide here, I used to spend a long time persuing the unknowable. My spiritual side is something personal and simple the only time these days when I wax philosophical is when required to as a student. Believe me I can keep up with the best of em I just choose not to.

Re: Freewill, Destiny, Fate
Fri, June 6, 2008 - 7:21 PMI drank everywhere Mike. When I moved to ATL in '94, the bars were accessable, as suburbia is not SF, and the drunks I befriended could not call me on my TALL tales of debauchery in my City daze... Plus, you can not buy liquor over the counter in GA on Sunday, but you can drive to a bar, put away as much as you like, then drive home. It's a weird world ain't it? And I was a frequent flyer at the CW, Zeitgeist, and every pro drinking establishment on 16th St. in the '80's before they all got bought up and trendy... Jack's at 16th & Guerrero used to be Flo & Swedes, and my aunt was Flo, so there ya go...a bar rat in the Irish Catholic longshoreman working class family I am a part of. Hell, Alfie from the Chatterbox still owes me about 30+ free games on KISS pinball from all the times she threw me out at closing time...Harvy's Place was where I got primed...I'm coming out in July, and I attend meetings I like in SF, all the while reliving my childhood, walking down memory lane, never regretting my past nor shutting the door on it...like the half one at Toronado. -

Fri, June 6, 2008 - 9:09 PMYeah, I was just messin with ya, I hit all those spots not to mention the 500 club where I would have a drink and cop and the douver club where the fuckettes hung out and specs etc etc etc, I enjoy walking down memory lane in the city just to remind me how far I have come, at heart I am still that punk boy I was without the drugs and booze. -

I believe in Fate. You can run Bev but you can't hide Marie.
Seriously, there are external themes in my life that aren't generated by me. I choose how to look at it, deal with it, not deal with it, whatever, but I didn't cause it, can't control it and can't cure it. -
